Multiple specializations are out there offered by various B-schools in Delhi- NCR. But only a few like Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Information Technology, Business Analytics and Operations Management etc. are common, as they are the majorly opted ones by the aspirants as their career choice.
“It’s not mere a choice of subject or the combinations of the subject, it’s a final choice of what your career will ought to be”. When a student enters into management field there is a desire behind it, first and foremost desire is a particular management profile which attracted him/her a lot at some point in life i.e. Advertising Expert, Market Research Analyst in Marketing and Wealth Manager, Investment Banker profile in Finance etc. Every specialization demands different set of skills, traits, competencies, capabilities etc. on the other hand offers a different learning and work perspective and scope in terms of distinct and numerous work profiles and packages etc.
Some specialization provides you a good opportunity in the beginning itself, while some offers slow but huge growth as they require more learning and experience in the field.

Which specialization to choose or How to choose?
Mostly the decisions made by the students are based on the momentary attraction or monetary attraction while sometimes it’s not about momentary attractions, It’s about passion. Passion when followed logically with arms of knowledge, self-awareness, capabilities, competencies and known scope of improvement help the passionate to reach any heights he/she desires for and makes the individual capable of conquering any battle .
Graduation stream do have an impact on the choice of specialization but don’t make it a parameter to choose your specialization. Many a times its been seen that non-commerce background students are doing better than commerce one in management field. Here we come again on the fact, think logically about relevant skills or traits that are already in you ,favourite subjects i.e. the ones you find interesting compare it all with the specialization options available choose the one in which you think you will able to succeed.
Most of the time the habit to follow the herd is the method used to choose specialization that some of my friend, elder cousin chose this specialization and got a decent profile and package at the end.
At that time aspirants forget about the fact that they are not similar to the person they are following as it is well known fact that every individual is different in terms of competencies, capabilities, learning interest etc.
Are these reasons or methods of choosing the specialization the right way to make one of the most significant decisions of your career?
It’s a decision where you need to introspect yourself i.e. what are your competencies, capabilities and interest. In short what is that special thing in you which makes you best suit for the specialization you are interested in. If not, then one needs to explore more.
This is why students generally opt for a general PGDM where the first year is not specialization based, to get basic knowledge of all the specialization. Reasons for the same are:
- The similar curriculum in first year irrespective of the specialization choice and graduation stream to provide thorough knowledge and clear the basics /concepts of all the specialization through conceptual learning and stream relevant activities so that students can understand and match their capabilities as per their specialization interest.
- As a manager one will have to coordinate and synchronize with other departments as well so having knowledge of the basics/ concepts and functioning of other departments will help.
- One should choose a specialization very carefully after having a clear understanding that yes this is what I want to do and succeed in. The mindset should be “I know, I can do good in this field “.
